Tonbridge Priory was built by, and know as a burial place for, the de Clare family up until the late 14th century. Of its buildings not a vestige remains; the South-Eastern Railway uses the site for a Groods Station, and the land is cut up with rails and sleepers. Here once stood one of the finest monasteries in the ancient diocese of Eochester ; consisting of a Chapter-house, Dormitory, Eefectory, Church, Vestry, Library, and other offices, which were unfortunately totally destroyed by fire on the llth of July 1387.
